This tiny island has an enormous amount of history,
possibly dating back as far as 4000 years ago. Dorset Eskimos,
Achaian Indians, Beothuk Indians and Europeans have all
occupied the island at one point in time.
In 1889 one of the largest and most modern Cod Hatchery's in
the world was established by Adolph Nelson from Norway. It was
designed to hatch between two and three million cod in a
season. Due to the lack of government funding the hatchery was
forced to close in 1891.
Boat tours to the island are available to visitors wishing
to learn more about the islands history. Experience a
traditional boil up, archaeological findings
& view the remains of early settlers uncovered to date,
and do some whale watching.
