St. Matthew's Anglican Church
Like many communities found in
Newfoundland, the church is the center of the community.
Construction first began on St. Matthew's Anglican Church in
1883 and was completed in 1897. The church has been restored
and the interior of the church remains in it's original state.
Oldest Headstone
An article submitted by, Mr. Melvin Rowe and
published in the Evening Telegram on April 1, 2021 stated
" Dear Sir, the town of Hearts Delight in Trinity Bay
may, and could hold, the long lost secret as to when the first
headstone was erected, not only in Newfoundland but in the
Western Hemisphere". The small piece of white marble
clearly indicates in, English design August 31, 154?. The last
number had been chipped away, possibly through the movement of
the bulldozer as it was preparing the foundation for a new
house. The authenticity of this find has never been documented
but the piece of headstone is now on display at St. Matthew's
Anglican Church.
