The Dildo and Area Community Economic Develop Inc. was formed in 1993 by a group of residents from the communities of Dildo, Broadcove, South Dildo and Old Shop to help create employment and stimulate the economy. The fishery was shut down by the cod moratorium and there was a real need to focus on other ways to revitalize the economy.
At this time, the federal government chose two areas of the Baccalieu Trail, one with a town council and another without, as pilot projects to investigate ways to strengthen economic development. The communities of Dildo, Broad Cove, South Dildo and Old Shop were chosen to carry out one of their pilot projects. Under the guidance of professional economic developers and public facilitator's this area underwent a lengthy process of looking at the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the communities.
A Development Task Force and Committees was formed to address the issues of low employment opportunities and threats to our way of life in small communities and to come up with creative solutions.
Initially there were different committees such as tourism, agriculture, education and youth, and aquaculture within the Dildo and Area Community Economic Dev. Group. Over the years there were several projects undertaken that provided much needed employment, however the most successful and long term project was the establishment of the Dildo and Area Interpretation Center.
