Georgetown is located approximately 23 km from the TCH, just south of Brigus. The town was founded by residents of Bull Cove, a tiny fishing community that was abandoned by 1921. Residents discovered that it would be more beneficial to be near the new railway branch to Harbour Grace and the main road linking to Conception Bay. It has been said that the name Georgetown may have derived from a prominent Member of the House of Assembly and resident of the community during the early 1900's,
"George Gushue".
