The Baccalieu Trail Tourism Association welcomes you to our new
website! We hope you
enjoy your visit to the Baccalieu Trail. "Baccalieu" is a Portuguese
word for Salt Cod.
The Baccalieu Trail's history and prominence in this industry is well known, as
our name indicates. Up until the 1960's, numerous small coastal communities
dotted our shores. Many have been abandoned. All that remains are the footpaths
and foundations and other remnants of the houses, that perched close to the
waters edge, in close proximity to the rich inshore fishing grounds, important
for small boat fishermen.
Indeed, the fog is a frequent visitor, as we are at the junction where the
Ice Berg filled Labrador Current meets the warm Gulf Stream. These currents and
giant ice visitors make summers bearable, as July and August high temperatures
usually fall in the 18 to-25 degree Celsius range (65 - 80 Fahrenheit), and the
marine influence also provides for cool ocean breezes; we seldom receive the
high humidity those on the continent receive.
 In
2001 the Tourism Assoc. began printing a map and schedule of events with
information about the region, and in 2002 it gathered the resources and printed
an updated map with a schedule of events, and the Excursion Around the Bay
Visitor's Guide with the assistance of partnering organizations.
